We've got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it.
Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will be as one.
I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.
The more I see the less I know for sure.
I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I'm one of those people.
Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.
Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it.
Everybody loves you when you're six foot in the ground.
Love is the flower you've got to let grow.
If someone thinks that love and peace is a cliche that must have been left behind in the Sixties, that's his problem. Love and peace are eternal.
My role in society, or any artist's or poet's role, is to try and express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel. Not as a preacher, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all.
If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace.
John Lennon was born in Liverpool on 9 October 1940, died New York on 8 December 1980) was an English singer and songwriter who was a member of the Beatles (1960-70), and with Paul McCartney, he co-wrote nearly all of their music, although the Beatles were a group of 4 equals who each led the group in different ways.
Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager and his first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into the Beatles in 1960. When the Beatles disbanded in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and songs such as "Give Peace a Chance", "Working Class Hero", and "Imagine". He married Yoko Ono in 1969 and eventually withdrew from performing in 1975 to bring up their son, but he re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release.
Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, writing, drawings, on film and in interviews. Controversial through his political and peace activism, he moved to Manhattan in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon's administration to deport him, while some of his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement and the larger counterculture. He got involved in Trancendental meditation, and was a notable peace compaigner
He transformed himself and his music several times – from skiffle to merseybeat to psychedelia to peace campaigner to rocker. Many of his later songs are full of searing honesty as he worked through the difficulties of his early life and upbringing. Ultimateley much of his later music was from the heart.
